Please respond in a brief essay of no more than 500 words to the following
questions:
- Where are you going in life?
- How are you going to get where you are going?
- Please tell us how you might answer Joram’s favorite riddle (there are no wrong answers)! “I give very good advice to just about anyone, but I don’t use much of it myself.”
Here are a couple of sample answers to help get positive energy flowing…..
Healthcare Sample
When I consider my future goals and how to achieve them, I know that my path must include education, working to support myself, and seeking guidance and support from my community. Any one of these things on its own will not get me where I am going, but together, they will. My plan is to become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, which will require both a Bachelor’s and master of Science in Nursing. Because my ultimate goal is to become a leader in the field, I am considering a joint Master’s Degree in Nursing and Business. While I am just at the beginning of this journey and still considering which path is best for me, I am committed to doing whatever it takes to get there. Currently, I am pursuing meetings with educators, working nurses, and other practitioners to gather more information about which programs will be the best match. I may decide to begin by earning a non-degree diploma or certificate, which would allow me to gain direct experience working in a healthcare setting while I pursue advanced degrees. In answer to Joram’s riddle, I might say: physician, heal thyself!
Creative Artist Sample
I am an artist, writer, and performer with the goal of honing my craft in multiple, interdisciplinary contexts. Ultimately, I hope to create, publish, and perform works that envision a more just and equitable world. Whether I am working on a comic book, writing a song, or acting in a theatrical production, I believe in the power of art to tell stories and reach communities in unique ways. How will I get there? My plan is to apprentice myself and learn from artists that I admire. This might look like taking a master class with an actor or artist. It might look like auditioning for a small role that may not pay much, but which will teach me a lot. It may look like traveling to New York to make connections. It might look like earning an MFA, although I am not yet ready to narrow myself to just one artistic focus. Right now, it also looks like working in cafes; reading books, listening to songs, and watching performances that inspire me. Most importantly it looks like finding the time to create. It may be that my talents will find a way to express themselves in other places, perhaps on social media, or working for a nonprofit. Whatever I wind up doing for my job, I know that it must include creativity, art, and music. The more I learn about these things now, the better prepared I will be for the future. My answer to Joram’s riddle, in the words of The Weekend, is: “Save your tears for another day.”
